That’s right ladies, you need to regularly back up your blog! This is quite possibly the number one most important thing for a blogger.
If you do absolutely NOTHING else as a blogger, backing up your blog is the one thing that is absolutely mandatory.
Yes, you should update your blog regularly with fresh content, yes you should strive to write with a mind for Search Engine Optimization and keep tabs on the latest updates for social media and so on and so forth, but ultimately if you do not back up you could very likely be left with nothing.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that most of you do not have a lot of money to throw at people who make a living fixing websites that have become corrupt, due to file issues or even worse, due to hacking. If you did, you would have someone who takes care of all your site’s maintenance needs and you wouldn’t be here.
Backing up your blog is actually a lot simpler than you may think. Yes, there are some fancy backup plugins for WordPress that take care of some of the more in depth database files and I will suggest one in a moment, but if nothing else, make sure you do at least the basic export function that comes with every single WordPress installation.
I do recommend that Blogger users and users of any other platform also backup your blogs, though it may be done less frequently if you use a platform that you are not self-hosting.
How often to backup
WordPress users or users of any self-hosted platform should backup weekly. This is assuming that you post 3 or more times per week. If you post less often than that you may prefer to choose a bi-weekly or even a monthly backup schedule but definitely make sure you are backing up once per month at the very least.
Users of any of the hosted platforms should backup monthly! Also, always (ALWAYS) make sure that anytime you get a new design you have a backup of both your blog and the old design!
How to backup
WordPress users simply click on “Tools” and choose “Export” from there you should not have to make any changes to the options of the export (you want to export anything) and click on “Download Export File”. Make sure that you are saving the file somewhere you remember.
Blogger blogs can be backed up by going into Settings -> Other then choose “Export Blog” in the Blog Tools section. For other platforms, just do a quick search on how to export your blog and follow the instructions, the export link is almost always in the Settings section.
There are a lot of backup plugins out there for WordPress, you’re looking for one with comprehensive backup options, especially to backup the database. Most are free, some are paid. Most of them only backup your database.. meaning that your other files like your theme and such will not be backed up.
I personally like to have a backup on my computer or in my email and not only have them on the server. This is because the majority of the times I have had issues with my websites it was due to hacking and when that happens it’s hard to know exactly what files are corrupt unless that’s what you do for a living.
So do a search and try out different ones, but the one that I use is WordPress Database Backup which can be found by typing that into the search box and can also be found here.
